Misc | Aditya Nishtala | December 1, 2009 at 10:33Today the 1st of December being the World Aids Day, I wanted to pool up, organize and post resources about AIDS in our blog and also wanted to look at what a sensible and an employable citizen of our country could do.

Some Stats and Facts:
- India has the world’s third largest population suffering from AIDS, after South Africa and Nigeria.
- However, the estimated number of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infections in India has declined drastically in recent years — from 5.5 million in 2005 to below 2.5 million in 2007.
- Approximately 50,000 children below 15 years are infected by HIV every year.
- For every 100 people living with HIV and AIDS (PLHAs), 61 are men and 39 women. Prevalence is also high in the 15-49 age group (88.7 percent of all infections), indicating that AIDS still threatens the cream of society, those in the prime of their working life.
- AIDS Awareness is the most important aspect.
- Women who have heard of AIDS (%) Urban: 80.7 Rural: 46.4
- Men who have heard of AIDS (%) Urban: 80.0 Rural :94.2
What can be done on the Social Media and Internet Today?
- You could display the Red Ribbon on you Social Networking Profiles like Orkut , Facebook and Twitter.
- You could join the RED community on facebook and twitter.
- Watch a live Alicia Keys concert on YouTube benefiting Keep a Child Alive.
- You could always share this article on Facebook and Orkut.
- If you’re a Blogger you could write a post on AIDS on this Day.
- Unite with others at the Global Network of People Living with HIV.
