A Career in Genetics and its career prospects after XIIth grade

I passed XII. I want to pursue research in Genetics. Can you guide me on how I should proceed? What are the courses I can opt for at Bachelor’s level and at Master’s level? Which are the colleges offering these courses? What are my career prospects?

Genetics is offered at both bachelor’s and master’s levels. So you start with opting at B.Sc, a combination that has Genetics as one of the subjects. Or you can take up B.Sc Genetics. Some institutes offering the course are: Colleges affiliated to Osmania University, Hyderabad, offers B.Sc with Genetics combined with subjects like Geology, Botany, Chemistry, Microbiology, Biophysics and Biochemistry. Padmashree Group of Institutions, Bangalore offers B.Sc Genetics. The eligibility criterion is +2 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology as optional subjects. For details, log on to www.padmashree.org You can take up Genetics at master’s level even if you studied subjects like Biochemistry, Forensic Science, Biotechnology or Nutrition and Dietetics at bachelor’s level. You may also consider more specialised areas like Human Genetics, Molecular Genetics and Medical Genetics at master’s level. Some institutes offering the courses are:
University of Delhi offers M.Sc in Genetics. The eligibility criterion is B.Sc (Honours.) in any branch of Life Sciences or B.Sc (General) with at least 60 per cent marks in their main subject (for Honours) or in aggregate (for General). The entrance to these programmes would be based on you performance at CSIR/ UGC/ DBT/ ICMR exams or entrance tests of the institutes.
