Q&AA.) Very Large Scale Integration (VLSI) is a part of manufacturing electronic chips. A course in VLSI typically imparts knowledge in various aspects of designing and, testing and verification of chips and technical software.

Professionals in this field find employment in electronics, instrumentation, hardware manufacturing, medical equipment, telecommunications and automation industries.

Courses in VLSI in India are generally offered at postgraduate level. Apart from IITs and NITs, there are many other universities that offer it. Also, there are a good number of institutes offering short-term courses in the subject.

The eligibility criterion is generally a bachelor’s degree in engineering or a master’s degree, with electronics as a subject. Since this field is a flourishing one, the competition to secure a seat in a good institute is tough. The following are the details about some courses and institutes offering them are:

Sastra University, Thanjavur offers M.Tech in VLSI. The eligibility criterion is BE/ B.Tech in CSE /ECE /EEE /EIE /I&C /IT. SRM University, Kancheepuram district also offers the course. Candidates who hold BE/ B.Tech in ECE/ EEE/ ICE/ IT/ CSE are eligible. The admission is based on performance at entrance test. For details, visit http://www.srmuniv.ac.in

Anna University, College of Engineering, Guindy offers ME in VLSI. The eligibility criterion is BE/ B.Tech in EEE/ ECE / Electronics/ Instrumentation/ EI/ IC/ CSE/ IT. The admission is based on scores in GATE/ TANCET. For details, visit www.annauniv.edu

C-DAC offers Diploma in VLSI. It is a full time 24-week course consisting of five modules, with an evaluation at the end of each module. The eligibility criterion is M Tech / B Tech / ME / BE in Electronics / Electrical /E and TC / Instrumentation / Computer Science / M.Sc (electronics). Experienced electronic designers, developers, system integrators from electronic industry and R & D organisations also can apply.

All applicants must know DOS or Windows or Unix. The admission is based on performance at Common Entrance Test (CET), subjective test and interview. For details, log on to www.cdac.in

University of Pune, ICIT VLSI Design and Research Centre, offers Certificate Course in VLSI Design. Candidates with BE/ B.Tech (Electronics and Telecommunication, Electrical, Instrumentation or Computers), M.Sc (Electronics, Instrumentation, Computers or Physics with specialisation in Electronics), MCS, MCA, MCM and Information Technology or equivalent are eligible for the course.
